An analysis of the mineral
lease
between Prize Energy and BNSF shows that BNSF owns the mineral rights
to almost all of Carrizo Ranch (there are perhaps three lots in
township 14 N, range 29 E, section 20, and also all of township 14 N,
range 28 E, section 21 to which BNSF does not appear own mineral
rights). This being the case, it is natural to ask how likely are
mineral claims to be made on Carrizo Ranch. This is not an easy
question to answer, but the following map is a start. It shows lease
activity for Apache County. In the following two maps, "leased land"
means land with split title (that is, one party holds the surface
rights, and another party holds the mineral rights), where the mineral
rights have been leased out. The black (productive leases) in the map
below is of greatest concern. It appears that there have not been any
productive leases in Apache County. Note that the next two maps aplpy
to federal land only.
